‘Are you a Jackie or a Marilyn?’ is the question posed in ‘Maidenform’, Season 2, Episode 6 of AMC’s Mad Men. First broadcast in 2008, and set in 1961, the storyline concerns on a proposed advertising campaign for Playtex brassieres. On a drunken night out, the ad-men divide the female characters into two categories: ‘Jackies’ after America’s First Lady, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (later Onassis); and ‘Marilyns’, after Marilyn Monroe. This episode was the inspiration behind Pamela Keogh’s new book, Are You a Jackie or a Marilyn? Timeless Lessons on Love, Power and Style. Keogh has previously covered other icons of the past, including Elvis Presley and Audrey Hepburn. She has also written about Kennedy in Jackie Style (2001), but this is her first full-length work on Monroe. Continue reading →

Fragments, Kim Stanley, Mad About Marilyn, Marilyn Monroe

I’m a little late in posting this. My review of Fragments, last year’s collection of Marilyn Monroe’s personal writing (which you can also read here), has been published in the December 2010 issue of Mad About Marilyn magazine.

It is an outstanding edition, also featuring an article comparing Marilyn with her peer, actress Kim Stanley, who played Cherie in the original Broadway production of Bus Stop, and a character based on MM in the 1957 movie, The Goddess; and a fascinating interview with Marilyn herself from 1954, in which she lists her most-admired men (including then-husband Joe DiMaggio, and future beau, Arthur Miller.)

Dover Publications is a US company, founded in 1941, that reissues classic literary works in value-priced, paperback editions.  In 2010,  Dover broadened their remit by publishing Marilyn, August 1953: The Lost Look Photos, a hardback, coffee-table book featuring John Vachon’s photographs of Marilyn Monroe in Canada, while filming ‘River of No Return’, most of which had never been seen before. It was released under their Calla Editions imprint, using paper from sustainable forests, and presented in landscape format. On the grey front cover, under the dust-jacket, is a silhouette of Monroe. Cindy De La Hoz is an American film historian, and has previously written about Lana Turner and Lucille Ball, as well as Platinum Fox (2007), a pictorial retrospective of Marilyn Monroe’s career at Twentieth Century Fox. The latter book was followed by a miniature edition, simply entitled Marilyn.

Marilyn Monroe: The Personal Archive is a broader look at Monroe’s life. It also features twenty facsimile documents, and is published in the UK by Carlton Books. In 2008, the US bookstore, Barnes & Noble, released a similar photo-biography with inserts, Jenna Glatzer’s The Marilyn Monroe Treasures.

Like Platinum Fox, De La Hoz’s book is lavishly designed, with a cushioned cover and pastel colour scheme. Continue reading →
