Douglas Morley Kirkland was born in 1934 in Toronto, and moved to the small town of Fort Erie, Ontario with his parents when he was three years old. His father, Morley, was a tailor who made and sold men’s suits from a store on Jervis Street, and his mother Evelyn kept the books.

“The first picture I took was with a Brownie box camera,” Douglas told American History magazine. “I was about seven or eight, and I was allowed to take a photo of my family standing at the front door on a very cold Christmas Day. It was a big deal to take a photo at that time because film wasn’t much available during the Second World War. There were eight exposures on that camera, and I had one opportunity to photograph my family. I pushed this box camera into my stomach to hold it very steady. So I heard that magic click; there it was for the first time. That is what has been pushing me ever since. And it’s taken me into worlds that I could never have imagined.” Continue reading →

“Oh, I’d like to ask you – how do you go about writing a life story? Because the true things rarely get into circulation. It’s usually the false things. If you ever get any of those things you want to ask, I’ll tell you. All those things come from the truth, you know? Because otherwise, it’s hard to know where to start if you don’t start with the truth.” – Marilyn Monroe Continue reading →

“Marilyn’s trip to England may have lasted just four months, but my journey with this book has endured for three decades,” Michelle Morgan writes in introduction to When Marilyn Met the Queen. She first began research in 1992, but was unable to find a publisher. Since then, she has written several books about Monroe, including the biography, Marilyn Monroe: Private and Undisclosed, and two other books focusing on specific periods of Monroe’s life (Before Marilyn, exploring her early days as a model; and The Girl, covering the years before Marilyn came to England, and her rebellion against the Hollywood studio system.)

“I now know why I had to wait thirty years for this book to happen,” Michelle reflects. “I would not have had the skill, resources or experience to handle such a massive project … the time has finally come to tell the England story.” The Prince and the Showgirl is one of Marilyn’s most neglected films, remembered chiefly as the backdrop to her turbulent relationship with director and co-star Sir Laurence Olivier, and with little consideration of her achievements as a star producer, or her cultural impact on England at the time. “This book is not just about Marilyn’s experience of Britain,” the Northamptonshire-based author explains. “It is also about Britain’s experience of Marilyn.” Continue reading →

Jerry Juroe with Marilyn at the Savoy Hotel, July 1956

Legendary movie publicist Charles ‘Jerry’ Juroe has died aged 98, Variety reports.

He was born in San Francisco, and as a child, attended an unforgettable North Beach baseball game with his father. “At that time its star player was probably better known because of his elder brother, Vince, who played in the minor league,” Juroe wrote in his 2018 memoir. “When a little boy meets a baseball player (even a sandlot level one), he is impressed only by his size and the aura of his uniform; but all my adult life I recalled with pride and awe meeting Joe DiMaggio at the very start of his storied career. To think that one day I would work in London, England, for a woman he married is a ‘bridge too far’ in anyone’s life of amazing coincidences.” Continue reading →
