2016 has been a year marked by loss: David Bowie, Prince and Leonard Cohen, to name but three giants who have left the stage. Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, spoke directly to our troubled times.
Massive Attack unveiled their Ritual Spirit EP, including ‘Take It There’, which reunited Tricky and 3D. Another single, ‘The Spoils‘, featured vocals from Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, who also released Until the Hunter, the third album from the Warm Inventions, her sister project with My Bloody Valentine’s Colm Ó Cíosóig. Coldcut also returned with the gorgeous ‘Only Heaven‘, taking in guest spots by Roots Manuva and Roses Gabor.
And in what has been a year of deep nostalgia, Ladies and Gentlemen…The Bangles!, a reissue of their debut album and other rarities, has been my unapologetic favourite.
