Elizabeth Gaskell, Gothic, Salem, Victorian, Witch

I studied Elizabeth Gaskell’s North And South for my English Literature A Level, without much enthusiasm. Nearly 20 years later, I’ve taken a look at Mrs Gaskell’s other work. I learnt a lot, not just of the actress’s love for pills and booze but also about the politics of the day, but at the same time it didn’t seem at all like a history lesson.”
