Thank you for posting this review on schwars' book I was about to start reading it but found it's introduction to be off putting. This book is nothing but an attempt to make money out of false controversy. If anyone here gets a chance to really watch Marilyns films you will see a very good actress who is using a lot of painful emotions that are all her own. I would suggest you all see The Misfits, Niagara, Bus Stop, and The Prince and the Showgirl.

Tara: I enjoyed your review of Schwartz and Taborelli very much, although you liked the latter better than I do. I have a book coming out on Marilyn with Harry Abrams next September--it's the Vanity Fair article cleaned up. I did a provenance on all the items.
I'm going to be in London over Christmas--Brighton, I know isn't far away. Would love to see you and talk about Marilyn. I'm here, in Los Angeles, close to sources on a lot of things, but of course I don't have Randy T's team of researchers. I think you are right on target about the childhood molesting. Where can I find the Liz Smith statement on Tab's evidence? I think I know who her impeccable source is.
Did I ever send you my article on Marilyn that was published in Cinema Journal? I'm doing a review of Schwartz, Tab, and the very flawed book on Marilyn and Arthur by Jeffrey Meyer for the Women's Review of Books, here in the US.
I feel guilty that I haven't been in touch before, but for the past three semesters I've had 170 students in my classes. I taught a class on Marilyn last spring. Really a success!

Thanks to you both for your excellent responses!

Ian, I'm fascinated yet repelled by celebrity. The media will always search for sensation, and who hasn't got some kind of flaw? There's a playground mentality to it all.

Sandy, I am the author of The Mmm Girl, a novel about the life of Marilyn Monroe. There's more info here - thanks for your interest!

Fascinating. Thanks for posting this. I'm interested in the nature of celebrity and the way people want it and then whey they have it, they want it on their own terms. It's an interesting idea that Marilyn would be condemned today as a "shallow wannabee". Who isn't condemned for something? Too thin, too fat, too old, too young. Did you see a model wearing Marilyn's 'bare back' dress on the Antiques Roadshow recently? It drew astonished gasps from the blushing onlookers.
