Veteran Hollywood actor Richard Widmark has died aged 93. A former teacher, he found fame playing the bad guy in Kiss Of Death, and went on to appear in classics of the ‘film noir’ genre such as Pickup On South Street, Judgement At Nuremberg, and Don’t Bother To Knock with Marilyn Monroe.

In the mid-1990s I attended a writers’ workshop at Brighton Unemployed Centre. Each Thursday morning, a group of about ten would meet in a basement room. Just outside was a washing machine and dryer, and above us a dance class was usually in progress.

I studied Elizabeth Gaskell’s North And South for my English Literature A Level, without much enthusiasm. Nearly 20 years later, I’ve taken a look at Mrs Gaskell’s other work. She also wrote a number of short stories in the gothic genre, seemingly a world away from her more familiar social realism.
